Stuart woman finds rattlesnake lounging by her front door

Patty Kothe was out walking her dog in her Stuart neighborhood when she got a call from a neighbor warning her about a six-foot rattlesnake right by her front door.

Kothe returned home through the garage and called Martin County Animal Control.

Animal Control arrived and captured the snake using snake tongs. The snake did not go willingly, lashing out and even trying to bite at one point.

The officers were eventually able to get the snake into a bucket and released him into a more rattlesnake-friendly habitat about a mile away.

Officers advise anyone who encounters a rattlesnake to leave it alone and call animal control. Rattlesnakes can be deadly, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“If she would have stepped out and accidentally stepped on it, she could have gotten bit,” Animal Control Officer Queen said. “So, it could’ve created a potentially dangerous situation.”

This time of year, snake sightings become more common as the weather gets warmer and snakes become more active.

For Kothe, the experience was more than just potentially dangerous, she was grateful her neighbor had warned her.

It took Kothe a couple of hours to calm down after the officers left. “It was crazy!” She said.

Rattlesnakes

Rattlesnakes are a type of snake that is found in North America. There are many different types of rattlesnakes, and they can be found in a variety of habitats, including forests, deserts, and even suburban neighborhoods. Rattlesnakes are venomous, and their bite can be deadly.

Rattlesnakes get their name from the rattle at the end of their tail, which they use to warn predators and prey alike of their presence. When a rattlesnake feels threatened, it will shake its tail, making a loud noise that sounds like a rattling noise. This is usually enough to scare away most animals.

However, if an animal or person does not heed the warning and comes too close, the rattlesnake will strike. It can strike quickly and with great accuracy, injecting venom into its victim through long, sharp fangs. The venom is very powerful and can cause serious injury or even death in humans.

If you see a rattlesnake, it is important to stay away and not to try to catch or kill it. If you or someone you know is bitten by a rattlesnake, it is important to seek medical attention immediately as the venom can cause serious harm. With proper treatment, most people who are bitten by a rattlesnake will make a full recovery.

Things to Do if You are Bitten by a Snake

There are a few things you should do if you are bitten by a snake:

1. Remain calm. This may be difficult, but it’s important to try to keep your heart rate low as this will help slow the spread of the venom.

2. Remove any jewelry or tight clothing from the area of the bite as this can constrict the area and make it difficult to treat.

3. Apply a clean, dry dressing to the wound and secure it in place with tape or a bandage.

4. Immobilize the affected limb with a splint or sling to prevent further movement and spread of the venom.

5. Keep the affected limb below the level of your heart to help slow the spread of the venom.

6. Seek medical attention immediately. It is important to get to a hospital as soon as possible so that you can receive the proper treatment for the snake bite.

With proper treatment, most people who are bitten by a rattlesnake will make a full recovery. However, it is important to seek medical attention immediately as the venom can cause serious harm.

Prevention of Snakes in Your Home

There are a few things you can do to help prevent snakes from getting into your home in the first place:

  • Keep your yard clean and free of debris. Snakes like to hide in tall grass and weeds, so keeping your lawn trimmed will help discourage them from taking up residence on your property.
  • Seal any cracks or openings in your foundation or around doors and windows. Snakes can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces, so it’s important to make sure there are no gaps that they can slip through.
  • Remove any sources of food or water from your yard. Snakes are attracted to areas where they can find food and water, so removing these attractants will help keep them away.
  • If you have a swimming pool, keep it clean and well-maintained. Snakes are often attracted to pools because they provide a source of water.
  • Be careful when handling file cabinets, boxes, or other objects that may be hiding a snake. When moving these items, always check them first to make sure there isn’t a snake lurking inside.

If you do find a snake in your home, the best thing to do is to leave it alone and let it find its own way out. Trying to kill or capture a snake can be dangerous, and it’s usually not necessary as most snakes will eventually find their way out on their own.
