Venomous Snakes in Treasure Coast, FL
There are many snake species in Florida, six of them carry venom and four of these six call the Treasure Coast area home. These are the Coral Snake, Water Moccasin, Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake and Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake.
Coral Snake
The Coral snake is a venomous snake that has colorful bands encircling its body. Its head, back of the neck, and tail are marked with yellow stripes.
It is one of the most venomous creatures in Florida. The snake’s body is marked with wide bands that completely encircle its elongated shape and it has a snout as black on top as its scales below.
It is often confused for other harmless species such as Scarlet Kingsnake or Scarletsnake.
Coral snakes are not aggressive. They will only attack if they feel threatened or cornered. Coral Snakes can be found in wooded areas, under rocks, and in piles of brush, boards and junk inside homes throughout Florida.
Water Moccasin
A water moccasin or cottonmouth can be easily identified by its wedge-shaped, blocky head and heat sensing slits beneath it’s eyes or nose. The snake also has an olive, dark-tan or brown body with black coloring on the edges of their scales.
When threatened, this snake can coil up tightly and open its mouth wide revealing the white cottony material inside that gave it its name.
Water moccasins can be found in the swamps and marshes of Florida. They are also commonly found in the same habitat of copperheads. There is a greater chance for cottonmouths to be confused with non-venomous watersnakes because they both tend to have an overall dark coloration with white and brown blotches.
Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake
The Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake is a small snake, but it has thick body for its size. The color of their body ranges from light to dark gray while displaying lengthwise row black or charcoal blotches that disrupts reddish-brown stripe running down the middle of their back.
A bright sulfur yellow tail tip distinguishes juveniles from adults in appearance and are about 12-24 inches (30-61 cm) long in total length.
This snake can be found in wooded areas, rock piles, ground debris and leaf litter around structures or trees.
Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake
The eastern diamond-backed rattlesnake is one of the biggest and heaviest in North America. Most of these snakes are about 33-72 inches (84-183 cm) in total length. They are a very large, heavy bodied snake with a row of brown diamonds with cream borders on their back.
They have thick heads that are distinct from the neck, and dark stripes running diagonally through each eye. This snake is one of the most venomous rattlesnake species and can be found in pine flatlands, rocky ledges, hills, prairies, wooded areas, and brush piles.
Identifying Venomous from Non-Venomous Snake Species
When encountering a snake in Florida, it is important to know if the creature is venomous or not. The easiest way to identify them is by their head shape, color pattern and behavior.
Head
Snakes with venoms typically have wide, triangular heads. These snakes can be identified by their bulbous head with a thin neck as opposed to harmless ones that slant gracefully while also having more gradual jaws without any marks or bulges on them from anything else like poison sacs found under other types of snake’s chins.
Coloring
Venomous snakes are also more likely to display bright colors and patterns. Green, yellow, red and black markings are all common in venomous snake species.
Non-venomous snakes will usually have lighter coloring while venomous ones display darker shades to help them blend in better with their surroundings.
Behavior
Another way to get an idea of whether or not a snake is venomous would be by observing their movement and behavior.
Venomous snakes are more defensive than other harmless species. They will coil, hiss, spread their neck into a hood when disturbed to look bigger, and strike out before retreating.
On the other hand, harmless ones will try to flee from danger via crawling away. Some non-venomous snakes will excrete musk or foul-smelling liquid when threatened to further deter predators or if they feel cornered.
If you see a snake on the ground, it’s best to just keep your distance. It may be harmless in most cases but if not, don’t risk getting close enough for them to bite you!
How to Get Rid of Snakes in Palm Bay and The Treasure Coast?
Snakes are attracted to houses or yards if they can find shelter and food. Most often, these sources of sustenance come from people who unknowingly provide for the snakes without realizing it because their homes and properties contain provisions that usually attract animals like rodents which many types of snake enjoy eating.
Remove Snakes Food Sources
Snakes love to prey on rodents. If you see a snake slithering around your backyard, it’s likely there is some sort of rodent infestation nearby. The first step to take would be to call pest control; they can safely remove the reptile and determine if any other measures need taken in order to eradicate the rodents from your property.
Remove Hiding Places
It’s also a good idea to keep your yard and home clear of things that could attract rodents. Many snakes enjoy living in woodpiles, brush piles and stone walls which they can hide in, removal and proper disposal of these things will help deter them from coming around.
Keep your wood piles neatly stacked and if you have a stone wall or small boulders near the house, make sure to clean it regularly and keep the weeds from growing around them so that snakes don’t find shelter behind them.
Use Snake Repellents
Repellent sprays for snakes will deter them from coming near your yard or home. Snakes don’t like strong smells so using these will make your place a less attractive spot for them to stay.
Snake repellents however, should be used in conjunction with other methods, not as the only way to get rid of snakes on your property.
If you need help with removing snakes around your Palm Bay or Treasure Coast area home, there are local experts that can help. Venomous or non-venomous, all snakes in Florida should be treated with care and respect. If you come across one of these creatures on your property and feel threatened by it, please contact us, so we can come and remove it from your yard.
Wildlife Removal and Snake Exclusion
If you want to get rid of snakes for good, it’s best to have a professional snake control expert come and permanently exclude them from entering your home. Exclusion may involve building cages on all openings, doors, windows and vents–to keep the snakes out of the home or yard.
Exclusion methods are also important because they’ll also block any other animals or pests that may be lurking around the premises into coming in as well.
Traps
While you can trap snakes, it’s not really a recommended method of control because they can injure pets and children who come across them. It’s best to let a professional service do this for you.
Dead Snake Removal in Treasure Coast Florida
If you find a dead snake in your home or yard, it’s important to get rid of it as soon as possible. Dead animals become a breeding ground for microorganisms and bacteria that can be harmful to humans if they come in contact with them. So better safe than sorry.
You can contact a Wildlife control company like us for assistance. At AAAC Wildlife Removal, we’ll not only remove the snake but decontaminate the area where they have died and clean the area thoroughly.
Snake FAQs
What should I do if I encounter a snake at my home?
The first thing to do is to steer clear of the snake if you can. Remain calm and slowly walk away from it while keeping your distance so that it doesn’t feel threatened by you.
Can I Kill Snakes in My Property?
The Florida Wildlife Commission says it’s legal on a private property even if you don’t have a hunting license. However, instead of killing the snake yourself, why not let us deal with it humanely?
We’ll make sure no other reptiles or animals will try to take its place and you won’t have to needlessly kill a snake.
